If you’re a mom, you know that time truly flies during that first year. One-year milestone sessions are some of my absolute favorite sessions to capture. They’re full of personality, curiosity, and so many adorable expressions, and of course, cake! Whether your little one is all smiles, a little shy, or more interested in crawling around than their cake, every session tells the sweetest story of who they are at this stage. Here’s what to expect at one-year milestone sessions at my Bulverde, TX studio
What to Expect During First Birthday Portraits
One-year-olds tend to have their own agenda, and that is completely fine and expected! That’s why my one-year milestone milestone and cake smash sessions feature just your little one and are designed as 30-minute mini sessions at my Bulverde, TX studio. It’s the perfect amount of time to capture beautiful portraits before little attention spans begin to fade, as one year olds tend to want a faster paced session when by themselves.
However, we can absolutely include the whole family too! I offer the option to upgrade to a full family session, which can take place outdoors or at another location of your choosing. This is a great way to get personality portraits of your little one along with your family!
One-Year Old Milestone Portraits
During the first half of your 30 minute session, we’ll focus on capturing your baby’s personality with simple, solo milestone portraits. This is the perfect time to photograph your little one in the adorable outfit you love and capture all those little details you’ll want to remember from this beautiful stage of life.
If you want to, I recommend bringing a second outfit for the cake smash portion, but don’t worry if your little one isn’t a fan of outfit changes; we can totally keep the same outfit on! As with all my sessions, I follow their lead to ensure they feel comfortable and have a good experience.
For the second half of the session, we bring out the birthday cake! For this, I provide a simple naked cake along with a cake stand. After baby enjoys their first taste of cake on camera, you get to take home any leftovers!
You’re welcome to personalize your baby’s session by bringing a few props of your choosing, such as a cake topper, balloons, fresh flowers, favorite toys, or other special keepsakes. You could even bring in your little one’s favorite book, or add a decorative banner to the background. These little details help personalize your baby’s milestone session, and truly make it your own. The options are endless here!
Cake Smash Photos
First birthday portraits are so much fun, especially with a cake smash! However, I like to warn parents that you never know how your baby will react – and that’s okay! You little one might love the cake and dig right in. They might also get upset and cry because it is something new and they don’t understand what to think. That’s okay too! Whether your baby loves the cake and is covered in frosting by the end, or wants nothing to do with it, we will still get sweet images of your little one. Just the simple cake on the stand in the background or next to your baby, will create beautiful memories. They don’t have to actually smash the cake for good portraits.
No matter how your little one responds, there’s no pressure for them to perform. My goal is never to force a moment that isn’t there. Instead, I let Mom or Dad introduce the cake while I photograph your baby’s genuine reactions and feed off of their personality. Making your little one comfortable for their sweet 1 year milestone session is always my main priority.
