Choosing the right newborn photographer can feel a little overwhelming, especially when you’re navigating life with a brand-new baby! Whether you’re a first-time parent or you’ve done this before, I always tell families that asking the right questions upfront makes all the difference in finding someone you truly feel comfortable with. That is why today I’m sharing the top 5 questions to ask your newborn photographer and my answers to those questions, along with highlights from one of the sweetest in-home newborn sessions I recently photographed of baby Callum.
His mama reached out when he was already a week old, and I’m so glad I could squeeze them in. This session was a perfect example of how things don’t have to go on an exact timeline to get beautiful results. Callum’s in-home session featured his dreamy little nursery with a subtle space theme, tons of natural light, and his squishy cheeks and sweet expressions that had me melting behind the camera!
Top 5 Questions To Ask Your Newborn Photographer
1. How Much Experience Do You Have With Newborns?
Newborn photography is its own world. These sessions require so much more than just taking a photo! Newborn photographers need to consider baby safety, be patient, soothing, and flexible. You always want to know how long they’ve been photographing newborns and how often they do these sessions. Personally, I’ve photographed dozens and dozens of newborns over the years and my newborns’ safety and comfort are always a top priority. I’m always keeping an eye on baby’s cues, working around feedings or diaper changes, and gently guiding things so that baby’s needs are met and it feels calm and natural for everyone involved.
2. What Safety Precautions Do You Take During the Session?
Safety should be every newborn photographers TOP priority. It is something I take very seriously. Always vet photographers and ask about their hands-on posing, sanitation practices, and how they keep babies warm and supported. No photo is worth compromising your baby’s wellbeing.
Safety is everything and I only pose babies in ways that are safe and natural for their age and development, and I always make sure the space is warm and comfortable. Whether we are at my studio or in the comfort of your home I will touch on these topics prior to and the day of to ensure the environment is safe and comfortable. I wash hands frequently, bring freshly sanitized gear, and respect your baby’s rhythms above all else.Â
3. When Should I Schedule a Newborn Session?
You’ve probably heard that the best time for newborn portraits is within the first 2 weeks for those sleepy, curled-up poses. But that’s not a rule you have to follow. You can see from Callum’s sweet session, his portraits are just as perfect even though he is a little older. When families decide to wait to document newborn photos, the session shifts in a beautiful way. Babies that are a little older are often more alert, offering glimpses of their budding personality. These moments are just as precious as the sleepy poses we often associate with newborn sessions. Read more about Why Awake Babies Are Just As Perfect.Â
However, I always recommend scheduling early and reaching out during your pregnancy if possible so we can tentatively schedule something around your due date. And don’t worry, I’m flexible! Babies come on their own timeline, and I always leave wiggle room for my newborn clients. When selecting a newborn photographer, this is something to be aware of and ask about so you know what to expect and have a plan in place if your baby comes early or late.
4. What’s Included in Your Session Package?
This can vary a lot between photographers, so it’s important to ask. With my newborn sessions, I offer a variety of options, both in home and at my light and airy studio in Bulverde TX. I offer full newborn sessions as well as bundles that can include maternity photos or milestone sessions of your baby’s first year. I’ll also walk you through everything needed for a session, such as picking out the best rooms for natural light or helping you with wardrobe options, so you can walk into the session feeling ready and confident.
I keep things simple and stress-free. No need to deep-clean the house or stress over the perfect outfits. All that’s really needed is some good natural light and your sweet family’s love.
5. Can Parents and Siblings Be Included in the Session?
This is something you should always ask, as photographers have different procedures and methods! For me, the answer is YES! Always. I believe this season is just as much about you as it is your baby. Whether it’s a sibling cuddling up to their new best friend or a quiet moment of mom and dad soaking it all in, these are the photos that tell the full story.
Including your whole family helps preserve the connection, joy, and love that surrounds your little one from the very beginning. See My Toddler-Friendly Approach to Newborn Sessions with Siblings.
