In-Home Older Newborn Session | William

Filed in:

I’ve had the joy of photographing the Mott family before, and one of my favorite things about them is how intentionally they choose to document their babies’ earliest days. This time around with William, they did something I absolutely love (and hope catches on!): they booked both a Fresh 48 and an in-home newborn session, but not back-to-back.

Why They Spaced Out Their Sessions

When William’s big brother, Tripp, was born, his newborn session had to be postponed because he was in the NICU. That meant we waited until he was a bit older. It was the perfect amount of time though, because mom fell in love with his chubbier cheeks, fuller body and the more awake moments we were able to capture.

For William, Mom wanted to recreate that magic on purpose. So, we photographed William’s Fresh 48 session to capture all those first-day details, making sure to focus in on the tiny fingers, wrinkly feet, and sweet newborn features. The other main goal of his Fresh 48 was to capture Tripp meeting his little brother for the very first time.

Then, about a month later, we met again for this sweet in-home newborn session, where William was just as precious, and a little bit more filled out and awake, just like we planned. When I walked into the Mott family’s home, I could feel the love in every corner. Big brother was so proud, Mom and Dad were relaxed and soaking in these first weeks, and William was an absolute dream to photograph. Also, the light coming in from the living room windows was pure magic.

Fresh 48 and In-Home Newborn Session: The Best of Both Worlds

I just love that the Mott family chose to schedule their newborn portraits like this! They ended up with two sets of beautiful, meaningful images, as they were still able to capture that newborn freshness during the fresh 48 and grab the slightly older newborn photos mom wanted.

I want to stress that there’s no right or wrong time to schedule newborn portraits. It all depends on the moments you want to preserve and what is most important to you! Whether you do a Fresh 48, a typical newborn session, a later newborn session, or some combination of these, it will be perfect because it is what is best for your family. However, by choosing a fresh 48 and a later newborn session, you really do get the best of both worlds.
