Expecting parents often ask me whether they should book a Fresh 48 or an in-home newborn session, and what’s the difference between the two. The truth is, both are beautiful ways to document your baby’s first days. They simply capture different moments of the story. Understanding the differences between Fresh 48 vs in-home newborn sessions can help you decide which one will fit your family best.
What Is a Fresh 48 Session?
A Fresh 48 session typically takes place within the first 24–48 hours after your baby is born and happens in the hospital room. These sessions are about documenting the very first moments of your baby’s life and all the tiny details and emotions that happen right after arrival.
One thing to keep in mind is that the scenery can’t be changed during a Fresh 48 session. If you’re not a fan of the hospital setting, then this type of session may not be the right fit for you. In that case, an in-home or studio newborn session may be the better option.
The main benefit is that Fresh 48 sessions capture those tiny, brand-new details that often change within the first couple of days. Seeing that wrinkly newborn skin, delicate fingers and toes, and that impossibly tiny newborn size is special and worth remembering.
What Is an In-Home Newborn Session?
In contrast, in-home newborn sessions usually take place a little later, usually around the two week mark. However they can absolutely happen later! Sometimes families prefer to wait until they’ve had more time together to settle into life at home.
In just the first couple weeks, babies have already changed so much. They may have fuller cheeks, a slightly fuller body, and a more baby look compared to those very first hours of life.
A major benefit to in-home newborn sessions is that they provide more control over the environment. We can use natural light in your home, photograph baby in the nursery you thoughtfully prepared, and capture cozy family moments in a space that already holds meaning for you. These sessions are incredibly special in a different way.
Why Some Families Choose Both
Many families actually choose to book both a Fresh 48 and a newborn session, which complement each other beautifully and provide the best of both worlds.
When parents choose this option, I often recommend doing the Fresh 48 right after birth in the hospital and then waiting around three to four weeks for the newborn session. By that point, baby has filled out more, giving parents two very different sets of memories, one of their brand-new baby and one of their sweet, slightly older newborn at home.
The great news is that with either session, a fresh 48 or an in-home newborn session, everything you need is within reach. This means that there is less stress surrounding the sessions, which is great for families, especially moms, adjusting to newborn life.
Fresh 48 Sessions Are Especially Sweet for Growing Families
While many first-time parents love Fresh 48 sessions, I often see second and third-time parents choosing them even more frequently. One of the biggest reasons is because they want to capture the moment siblings meet the new baby for the first time.
This particular Fresh 48 session took place at North Central Baptist Hospital in San Antonio, TX, and it was such a sweet experience to document. Big brother was absolutely thrilled to meet his new baby sister. Watching his excitement and curiosity as he peeked at her in the hospital bassinet was such a special moment.
The family had received beautiful fresh bouquets of flowers from loved ones, and we used them as a soft backdrop for a few portraits of baby girl sleeping peacefully in her bassinet. It was simple, natural, and perfectly fitting for those first quiet hours together as a family of four.
Fresh 48 vs In-Home Newborn Session: Which Session Is Right for You?
Both Fresh 48 and in-home newborn sessions offer something unique. Fresh 48 portraits document the raw emotions and teeny tiny newborn details during the earliest moments of your newborn’s life, while in-home newborn sessions capture the next chapter, once your family has settled into life together and baby has grown just a little. Regardless of which one you choose, you will have the sweetest memories of your little one that you will always remember.
