I love in-home newborn and lifestyle sessions so much. There is just something special about being in your own home with your family that makes the portraits even more meaningful. While I am always one to immediately suggest doing an in-home session, many families are a little hesitant. They fear their home is perfect enough – that it doesn’t look a certain way or isn’t clean enough. This is a common misconception that couldn’t be further from the truth. Because the truth is, your “Imperfect” home is perfect for photos.
It doesn’t matter if your home is perfectly styled with magazine worthy rooms. What matters is the connection your family shares and capturing your story in this season of life, right now. Here’s why your “imperfect” home is perfect for photos.
Simple Spaces Photograph Best
Rather than a fully decorated space, simple spaces are actually better. I prefer clean walls with minimal decor and rooms that feel lived-in not staged. This allows the focus to stay exactly where it should be on your baby and family. Hallie’s in-home newborn session here in Bulverde, TX is the perfect example of that.
During the session we used three spaces in their home: the playroom, her nursery, and the master bedroom. Each room added the perfect touch to the final gallery. It was simple, natural, and completely true to this season of their lives.
In-Home Sessions Focus on Natural Light
When I come to your home, my focus is not a room, it’s the light! I’m looking for the best natural light. That might mean we end up in a playroom instead of a formal living room, or your bedroom instead of the nursery. The light is essential as it is what creates those soft, timeless images you see throughout my work. It shapes the mood, highlights connection, and brings everything to life in a way that decor simply can’t.
So if the best light in your home happens to be in a space you didn’t expect, we’ll lean into that.
Your Connection is The Most Important
As you can see from this precious session, I focus more on the connection of you with your family than what the room looks like. It helps to have rooms tidy but being spotless is not necessary (think quick declutter, not deep clean). Instead of the rooms or spaces, I capture the way you hold your baby and the quiet in-between moments of your family. These are the details that matter.
Hallie’s session wasn’t about creating a picture-perfect home. It was about preserving a fleeting season in a place that already holds so much meaning.
Don’t Wait to Document This Special Moment
If you’ve been hesitating to book an in-home session because your home doesn’t feel “ready,” or “perfect”, I hope this gives you permission to let that go. I promise you don’t need more decor, a bigger space, or the perfect room. Just being together is all you need.
Years from now, you won’t be looking at your photos thinking about your furniture or the decor in the rooms. Instead, you’ll be remembering this special season of your life where you brought your baby home. Looking at the photos will allow you to relive this constantly changing, and fleeting moment in your and your baby’s life.
