Tips to Prepare For An In-Home Newborn Session

Filed in:

One of the biggest reasons I love in-home lifestyle newborn sessions is because they are naturally more relaxed for everyone involved. There’s no pressure to be anywhere, no rushing out the door with a brand new baby, or packing up half the nursery. Instead, everyone can relax while I come to you. Many new parents stress over baby needing to eat, being fussy, or the state of the home. However, I really want to reassure all parents that there is no pressure whatsoever. I follow your baby’s lead in the session, and I’m simply there to document all the sweetness as it unfolds naturally. Here are a few tips to prepare for an in-home newborn session.

Tips to Prepare For An In-Home Newborn Session

The first thing I tell all parents is to relax and enjoy the moment. Let me worry about the logistics of everything! You remaining relaxed helps baby stay calm for the session as well. My goal is always to take away any stress before and during a session. For sweet Blair’s newborn lifestyle session in San Marcos, TX the morning felt calm, cozy, and exactly how these sessions are meant to feel. Everyone was relaxed, baby was content, and we were able to simply ease into the rhythm of the morning together while capturing this incredibly special season. Mom and dad’s calming presence set the tone for an enjoyable and relaxed session.

Feed Baby Before the Session (If Possible)

One of the best ways to help your newborn feel settled for photos is to feed the baby and ensure they have a clean diaper before the session begins. However, if you’re still feeding your little one when I arrive, please do not stress at all! This is actually the perfect time for me to start photographing nursery details, little outfits, blankets, or meaningful pieces around your home while baby finishes eating. There is never any rushing during a newborn session because I am completely on baby’s schedule.

Tidy the Spaces We’ll Use

You do not need a perfectly spotless home for beautiful newborn photos. I promise. I know this particular item tends to cause stress in us moms. Even though I have been guilty of it for my own in-home family sessions, I can 100% assure you that your home doesn’t need to be deep cleaned or perfect.

For most in-home sessions we only use a couple of spaces, which tend to be the areas with the best natural light. Whether it is the nursery, master bedroom, living room, or even a cozy corner near a window, all you need to do is lightly tidy the space where you’d like photos taken and nothing more.

Pick Out Outfits Ahead of Time

If you’re unsure what everyone should wear, I’m always happy to help guide you! Before your session, I recommend laying out outfits for baby and family members ahead of time so there’s one less thing to think about the morning of your session. Soft neutral tones, light textures, and comfortable clothing always photograph beautifully and help create that timeless, cozy feel.

Keep a Pacifier or Bottle Nearby

Whether you’re breastfeeding or bottle feeding, breaks during newborn sessions are completely normal and expected. Newborns are still adjusting to the world around them, and during those early weeks they often want extra snuggles, soothing, and frequent feedings. Cluster feeding is incredibly common during this stage as well. Remember I am on baby’s schedule here, so it is completely fine if they need to stop and eat multiple times. I do recommend having a pacifier nearby or a bottle ready if you’re bottle feeding, as that can sometimes help soothe baby in-between moments.

Relax and Enjoy the Moment

I truly want parents to relax and focus on the connection with your little one. I am there to be a fly on the wall and capture this sweet milestone in your lives. Blair’s session was such a beautiful reminder of that. The quiet snuggles, the slow moments, the way everyone simply settled into being together at home are always the moments that matter most.

In-home newborn sessions are designed to feel gentle, relaxed, and true to this season of life with your little one.
