San Antonio In-Home Newborn Session | Tips for Sessions with Young Siblings

Filed in:

This session was an absolute dream! I first met this sweet family during fall minis about two years ago, and since then, I’ve been lucky enough to capture so many beautiful milestones in their lives. It’s truly a privilege to be part of their journey, and this San Antonio in-home newborn session for baby Emilia was no exception. Emilia is the most precious baby girl! Swaddled up and content in the arms of her family, she was a joy to photograph. Her tiny fingers, toes, and that gorgeous head of hair were simply irresistible.

Navigating Sessions with Close-in-Age Siblings

One of the most heartwarming aspects of this session was Emilia’s big brother, Marcelo. At just three years old, he was the SWEETEST big brother. When I asked his parents how they managed to prepare him so well, they told me their secret: they had Marcelo hold baby sister a lot before I arrived. It wasn’t new to him, and he was already comfortable and confident holding her. This extra bit of preparation made a world of difference, and it’s something I highly recommend to parents with younger, older siblings.

Typically, when working with younger siblings, I like to start by capturing the sibling with the newborn right away and then jump into family portraits. Younger children often have shorter attention spans, so we prioritize these moments while they’re still engaged and excited. Marcelo was such a trooper, interacting with his baby sister and showing her such love and care. His dad was also amazing, keeping Marcelo involved throughout the session with playful interaction, which helped him last the entire time. It was such a sweet dynamic to witness.

Top Tip for Sessions with Young Siblings

When you have two under two or close-in-age siblings like this, it’s helpful to have another family member present during the session in case they need a break. This way, they can go play or relax while we focus on capturing those special moments with the newborn. While Marcelo lasted for the entire session thanks to his dad’s efforts, his aunt was nearby, just in case he needed a break.

Emilia’s session was a beautiful example of how well things can go with a little preparation. I’m so grateful to have captured these beautiful memories for this wonderful family! If you’re ready to book your newborn session, reach out today!
