One of the most common questions I get from new parents before their newborn session is: What should we wear? And my answer? It depends on your style! Some moms prefer a cozy, casual look, while others love to dress up for the occasion. There is truly no wrong answer—it’s all about what makes you feel comfortable and confident.

That being said, there are a few tips I always recommend to help create the soft, timeless feel that lifestyle newborn photography is all about.

What to Wear for Your Lifestyle Newborn Session

Stick with Soft, Neutral Colors

Soft tones like whites, creams, beiges, and pastels photograph beautifully and complement every skin tone. My personal favorite, however, is white! Not only does it edit beautifully, but it also prevents any harsh reflections from casting onto your baby’s delicate skin.

Think dad in a light-colored button-up, mom in a white or cream soft knit dress, and siblings in simple, neutral-toned outfits. This keeps the focus on your family’s connection, and most importantly your little one, rather than bold patterns or distracting colors.

For your sweet newborn, simple is best. A white or neutral swaddle, a soft onesie, or even just a diaper for those cozy, skin-to-skin shots all work beautifully. The focus of newborn sessions is on your baby, so keeping their outfit minimal helps highlight all of their tiny details.

Keep It Simple and Comfortable

The early newborn days are filled with snuggles and soft moments, and your outfits should reflect that. Flowy dresses, cozy sweaters, and soft knits work wonderfully. If you prefer a dressier look, a long, neutral maxi dress or a simple blouse or sweater paired with a skirt can feel effortlessly elegant while still being comfortable enough to move freely with your baby.
