Anytime someone books a session with me, I first do a happy dance, and then I send over a wardrobe guide. I feel this helps calm the nerves of “eek! what am I going to wear for this!!” I know us moms tend to stress over what everyone is going to wear, and my goal is to remove any stress and make the entire experience enjoyable for everyone. Knowing that wardrobe questions are common, here are a few of my top styling tips for newborn sessions.
What to Wear for Your In-Home Newborn Session
My biggest piece of advice when it comes to choosing outfits is to wear what feels like you. Whether that’s a breezy dress or a cozy sweater and jeans, your outfits should reflect your style and personality. Trust me, when you are wearing what is comfortable to you, confidence soars!
For Hudson’s sweet newborn session, new parents, Amber and Grant, wore soft tones that complemented the colors of Hudson’s adorable nursery. Amber wore a flowy dress with a dainty blue floral pattern. It was simple, soft, and absolutely perfect for their session. It also paired beautifully with Hudson’s baby blue onesie, and later, his white swaddle. Grant stayed neutral in a crisp white shirt and light tan pants, grounding the look.
Here are a few more recommendations for styling newborn sessions:
- Stick with soft, muted tones. Pastels and light neutrals photograph beautifully and help maintain that light and airy feel many families love. A good rule of thumb: when in doubt, stick with pastels.
- Textures and patterns are great! – just make sure they are in light, neutral colors. However, try to avoid anything too bold, bright, or that has large wording or logos.
- Skip the bright red. While vibrant in real life, red reflects on skin tones and can cause edits to lean darker than you’d like.
- You can go simple or you can go fancy, just make sure you wear what feels like you!
In addition, if you’re wanting a little extra pampering for your session, I’ve got you covered. My incredibly talented, most trusted friend, Suzanne, will take care of you with her hair and makeup skills. I’ve personally worked with her since 2018, and she’s a true gem. You can check out her work here.
Amber and Grant’s home was full of soft light and peaceful moments. In-home newborn sessions aren’t just about the baby (although let’s be real, baby Hudson stole the show). It’s about capturing your life as a new family, and that includes all the details, emotions, and little moments that make up your family story.
If you’re getting ready to welcome a little one and wondering what your newborn session could look like, I hope these styling tips and glimpse into Hudson’s portraits gives you both inspiration and peace of mind. I’m here to guide you every step of the way, from wardrobe tips to making sure baby feels cozy and calm throughout the session.
