This past year, my business has gone through a bit of a shift, and it is one that feels incredibly aligned with my heart. More and more, I’ve found myself capturing families right where life is happening: at home. I absolutely love meaningful in-home lifestyle photography, which is why when Abby inquired about an in-home family session I was thrilled. These are the types of sessions that mean the most, and the Ruiz’s family session was the perfect reminder of why.
The Beauty of In-Home Lifestyle Photography
I think part of my love for in-home sessions comes from my own childhood. My dad always had a camera in hand capturing our family. 85% of those photos were taken right at home, except for when we were traveling, and then the picture total doubled! Now, when I look back, those in-home images are the ones I treasure most. They feel real. They bring me right back to those everyday moments that would have otherwise faded over time.
There’s a certain nostalgia that comes with in-home lifestyle photography. It’s not about perfect poses or picture-perfect locations. Rather, it is more about preserving what your life actually looks and feels like in this season.
Meaningful In-Home Lifestyle Photography
When I think about the memories I want to hold onto in my own life, they aren’t the big, planned outings. They’re the slower, quieter moments at home. It’s the weekend mornings making pancakes, snuggles on the couch, the chaos of a pillow fight, or the kids playing in our garden. Those are the moments I want to remember most, and they tell our story. Bring at home brings a warmth and coziness to images that can’t be recreated anywhere else.
These are the pieces of your story that deserve to be captured and remembered too. While places like botanical gardens are beautiful, they don’t always reflect your family in the same way your home does. Your home is where your life unfolds, and that’s what makes these sessions so meaningful.
The Ruiz Family Session
When Abby and I started planning their session at their home in Bulverde, TX, she mentioned how much she loves cooking for her family. Right away, I knew we needed to incorporate something that felt true to them.
For their session, we baked cookies together. It was every bit as sweet and fun as you’d imagine. Little hands helping, lots of laughter, and the kind of moments that you can’t really plan for or direct; they just happen, and it’s these candid lifestyle moments that become your instant favorites.
During this session, I also learned that I should ask to have a batch of cookies ready before I arrive so you can actually eat them afterwards! While we had the best time making the cookies, they were a little too hot to enjoy at the session.
The Ruiz family’s session was filled with so much joy and connection. It felt natural and completely them, which is always my goal. This is also why I always plan to include one or two simple activities in my sessions. It draws everyone in, helps kids feel comfortable, and creates images that feel alive, not forced.
Telling Your Story
If you’ve ever found yourself wanting photos that feel more real, meaningful, and a lot more like your actual life, an in-home session is the perfect choice. These are the images you’ll look back on years from now and remember not just how everything looked, but how it felt.
