Relaxed Newborn Session | My Toddler-Friendly Approach to Newborn Sessions with Siblings

Filed in:

As a newborn and family photographer, it’s no surprise that I absolutely adore newborns and little ones. One of the things I love most about in-home newborn sessions is the relaxed feel and the ability to naturally include siblings. When I am capturing newborns with older siblings, my toddler-friendly approach is all about making big siblings feel like they’re part of the fun. Instead of expecting them to pose perfectly right away, I take my time, letting them warm up to me and become their bestie so that capturing those sweet, authentic moments feels effortless.

My Toddler-Friendly Approach to Newborn Sessions with Siblings

My approach gives toddlers time to adjust before the pictures, which is key. While you finish getting yourself and your newborn ready for the session, I spend time hanging with your little one. Sometimes that involves them helping me take nursery portraits, or simply playing in their room. I want them to be completely comfortable with me, that way when it’s time to pose with their little sibling it feels more like a fun little game of us playing, instead of a stranger walking in and telling them to sit and smile.

When I arrived at the beautiful family home in San Antonio, TX for Reed’s relaxed newborn session, my first priority was Reed’s big sister, Sadie. As always, I wanted her to feel comfortable, excited, and most of all, involved. Upon walking in, Sadie looked at her mom and said, “Mommy, it’s Elsa!!!” (thanks to my side braid 😉). I knew right then that we were going to be friends and have a great time.

I spent time with Sadie before starting, and she told me all about her new baby brother. By the time we started taking photos, Sadie was so comfortable! She was so sweet and curious about Reed, showering him with love.

Relaxed and Candid Newborn Session

Reed was as content as could be, nestled in his parents’ arms while his sister doted on him. Since natural, candid moments are my favorite, we let the session unfold in the heart of the home—the kitchen. With warm light pouring in from the window, the family snuggled together on the counter while I captured them enjoying the quiet moments of their new life as a family of four.

One of my favorite parts of the session was Sadie’s little sink bath. Dad and Reed were nearby as well, turning a simple routine into a sweet, memory-filled moment. These are the everyday interactions that parents don’t always think to document, but always turn into the sweetest and most treasured memories.

Reed’s in-home newborn session was filled with so much love and the sweetest sibling moments. I feel so honored to have captured these memories for this beautiful family.
