I was so excited to finally meet sweet baby Charlotte, as I have been anticipating her arrival ever since I captured this family’s Brackenridge Park Maternity Session! From the moment I arrived at their beautiful family home in Fair Oaks Ranch, TX, little Miss Charlotte was wide-eyed and ready to be the star of the show. There’s a common misconception that newborns must be sleeping for their session. While those sleepy shots of a newborn all curled up, snuggled tight and dozing peacefully are beautiful, I’m here to tell you that it’s not the only way! Charlotte’s session is a perfect example of how awake babies are just as perfect, just as sweet, and just as memorable.

Why Awake Babies Are Just As Perfect

Mom told me when I got there that Charlotte hadn’t had her morning nap, and isn’t a huge fan of sleep in general. It all worked out wonderfully, as she was bright-eyed and alert, soaking in the world around her, and just as sweet as can be! She never dozed off once, and it couldn’t have been more perfect. I am so in love with her portraits, as Charlotte gave us the most beautiful expressions and natural moments.

The only real difference when your baby is awake during their newborn session is that there are a few more feeding breaks. However, those are not interruptions; they’re tender, real moments that are full of connection. Those nursing or bottle-feeding portraits can be some of the most cherished from the gallery.

Every baby is so different, and I truly believe in embracing your little one exactly how they are. If they’re sleepy, we roll with it. If they’re wide awake and curious like Charlotte, we lean into that and capture all those beautiful, alert details that make your baby uniquely them. Charlotte will grow up knowing she came into this world bright-eyed and ready to explore, and now her family will have those memories forever.
