If you’ve lived in Texas for any amount of time, you know summer arrives with high temperatures and hot sun. For many families wanting summer family photos, this can be a problem, especially if you have young children. As a mom myself, I know that asking little ones to smile when it’s 100+ degrees outside isn’t always the recipe for a fun evening. Besides, no one wants photos dripping in sweat! Why I Love In-Home Sessions During the Summer
One of my favorite things about photographing families at home is how naturally children settle in. Young children are happiest and most comfortable when they are at home. I’m a complete stranger walking through the front door with a camera, but it doesn’t take long before little ones want to show me their world. Maybe it’s their latest LEGO masterpiece, the artwork hanging on the refrigerator, or their favorite place to snuggle Mama on the couch. Your home doesn’t need to be perfect, because to your children, home is perfect and the most wonderful place in the world. It’s where they feel safe, can be fully themselves, and where your family’s story unfolds every single day.
This is all we need for beautiful family photos… along with a little natural light!
Letting Kids Be Kids
During family sessions, I always let children lead, and encourage families to slow down and do the same. Of course I’ll give prompts and gentle direction, but the best photographs almost always happen organically during the in-between moments. I watch how your children naturally interact with you and with each other, then I build the session from there feeding off their queues.
If they want to be wild let them! My goal is for your photo experience to become a memory itself, and not just something that produced beautiful photographs.
The Sweetest Summer Session in Shavano Park
This wonderful family decided to avoid the Texas heat altogether and invited me into their beautiful home in Shavano Park for a lifestyle family session. It could not have been more perfect!
The kids loved being in their own space and were eager to show me their jewelry, books, and even their dance moves! As the session went on and they became even more comfortable, their personalities absolutely blossomed. There were giggles, dancing, snuggles, and so many genuine moments that perfectly reflected this family and their season of life right now.
The best part is that we were able to capture all these genuine family moments in one spot of the house. A stunning wall of windows with beautiful shelves below provided the perfect place to sit while soft natural light poured into the room. That was all we needed to create these timeless family portraits.
