When you think about an extended family session, you might picture everyone meeting at a pretty outdoor location, lining up for the traditional family photo, and then heading home. While there is absolutely nothing wrong with that, what if instead, you went somewhere that means something to your family? I am a huge fan of in-home sessions for families and newborns, but most never consider doing one for an extended family session. This extended family session in Burnet, TX was a dream and completely sealed the deal for me on why in-home extended family sessions are so meaningful and are the way to go!
When my dear friend Jordan reached out about photographing her family at her parents’ home, I knew this session was going to be special. Winnie and Pop are planning to sell their home, and before it changed hands, their family wanted to document everyone together there. Now, even when the house is sold, this sweet family will have these precious memories forever. Not only that, but the photos will mean so much knowing it’s at Winnie and Pop’s home, as opposed to say an empty field at a park.
This is the place where family gathered, grandchildren came to visit, memories had been made, and where so many ordinary family moments happened over the years. This session became a way of preserving a little piece of that chapter before it ended. Now, everyone will remember what Winnie and Pop’s house looked like and be reminded of all the wonderful memories of playing in the yard, eating ice cream, and spending time with their cousins and grandparents.
Multi-Generational Family Photography
Jordan specifically told me she wanted some more formal family portraits, and of course, we made sure to get them! For the first part of our session, we focused on those classic portraits that everyone wants to have. The whole family together, grandparents with their kids and grandchildren, individual family units, and all those combinations that are especially important during an extended family session. Then, once we captured those images, we loosened things up and incorporated all the things this family loves to do at Winnie and Pop’s house.
Candid Extended Family Photos
This part of the session was SO much fun! There were baseball games, front porch ice cream, and even a little fun with the water hose. The kids played, ran around, interacted with everyone, and just enjoyed being together. Instead of spending the entire session standing still and smiling, they were actually living in the photographs. These candid, unscripted moments always become some of my favorite images.
Why I Love Extended Family Sessions at Home
Extended family sessions can sometimes feel overwhelming. There are more people, more personalities, more combinations of family members, and usually a few little ones who aren’t particularly interested in pictures. This is exactly why I love bringing the session to you.
Being at home gives everyone a familiar place to relax and be themselves. Kids can play and grandparents can sit down when they need a break. The best part though is that you can incorporate the activities your family actually enjoys and allow your home to become part of the photographs.
One thing I want my families to know is that I am more than happy to travel for your session. You don’t have to live right around the corner from me in Bulverde to have an in-home family session.
